LECTURE

Week 1 / Project Briefing :

Week 2 / Design Thinking :

WEEK 1

For the first week of this semester, Mr. Mike briefed us about those projects we are going to cooperate with. There are a few options for us to work with :

- Healthify Project (Bizpod Director Ms. Jessie Chong)
- SUGOi Project (EAP)
- Extrash Project (EAP)
- Fertility Website Project (Computing)
- Tomorrow Burger Project (SOMAC)
- Food in the City (WBU Teams)

We are required to choose either one of the projects to work on in groups. We need to have equal strengths for each of the groups, meaning all 4 specializations should be included in each group. As a result, I'm going to group with Jia Yang, Rachel, Jez and Naomi.

WEEK 2

We had a group meeting in Discord for further research and discussion about our idea and interview questions. Furthermore, we combined everyone's idea together in Miro and show it to Mr. Mike.

fig. 1.0 ; week 2 discussion (Miro)

Lecturer's Feedback :
- Target audience (not enough information)
: who exactly we are targeting
- Ask the interview questions each other
- Try to ask questions that the audience can evaluate more
- Comparison is good
- Solutions too general
- Question for communities
- DIY in major, connect with people
- Specific breakdown

After receiving the feedback from Mr. Mike, we had another short meeting again to discuss about the target audience's characteristics, urban area residence and motivations to participate urban farming (Malaysian).

WEEK 3

We are required to show Mr. Mike our compilation conceptual research in class. After consulting the interview questions with Mr. Mike, we will need to find a few specific persona for the interview.

fig. 1.2 ; conceptual research

Lecturer's Feedback :
Target Audience :
- Mostly urban
- Middle and higher income group.
- 3-4 personas.
- Primary target is 30-55 age group (married with children) women. (Mostly sell)
- Secondary target is (not married/married without children) women.
- Tertiary target is companies (nursing home, hospital etc.) can work.
- Persona not a real person, characteristic/ attribute must be based on a real person.
- Test the survey questions (to see are they relevant to fix the questions).
- Only targeting Malaysians.

Rachel, Naomi and me had found three personas to interview. We created a form in Miro and updated the information we had interviewed them.

fig. 1.3 ; personas

Lecturer's Feedback :
Persona
- The percentage of the target audience on our personas are missing. Choose which persona is your primary market.
-  No need to follow the template exactly, can change words you familiar with.
- We need to find the personas for 21-30 & 31-40.
- How are these frustrations related to the solutions that you will be creating?
- How are these goals related to the solutions that you will be creating?

WEEK 4

We planned to have a meeting in Discord every Thursday and Sunday. This week, we found two more personas based on the feedback given by Mr. Mike. Nevertheless, he mentioned that there are two personas wasn't very useful for our target audiences.

fig. 1.4 ; removed personas

Other than that, we also need to find out the differences between these three chosen personas. Why we choose them? How we categorized them?

fig. 1.5 ; differences

Furthermore, we showed Mr. Mike our survey questions (not yet finalize).

fig. 1.6 ; survey questions

Lecturer's Feedback :
- Add more survey questions.
- Find people for the survey.

We rearranged the questions in order then imported all the questions to Google Form. Moreover, we decided to translate the questions into Mandarin and Malay version so that we could conduct more different races answers. After finalizing all the questions, we sent it to our family and Facebook groups that are relevant to our topic to get more participants.

WEEK 5

For this week, we showed Mr. Mike our ideas, key themes and insight statements.

fig 1.8 ; Insight Discovery

Mr. Mike said that our ideas and insight statement could work, and so we could start to work on the Problem Statement and How Might We part.

fig. 1.9 ; Problem Statement

Mr. Mike informed us that this Friday will be our first meeting with the West Bohemia University. SO we should be prepared to share our summarized but accurate report of our research data and the conclusions that have led us to the Problem Statement and How Might We questions. There will be an ice-breaking session too.

We combined and summarized what we had done during this few weeks in Miro. Each of us will present a part on this Friday.

fig. 1.10 ; summarized data

WEEK 6

As what Mr. Mike had mentioned last week, we should continue to work on the ideas and concept of our product. We searched a few references from online. Other than that, Naomi also sketched out our ideas for the product design.

fig. 1.11 ; ideas

During the class, Mr. Mike mentioned that he want us to show the user journey map for our product. However, we quickly work on this part while other groups was presenting their progress.

fig. 1.12 ; user journey map

Lecture's Feedback :
- Refine the user journey
- What type of magazine?
- Influencers must be related to the target audience.
- What kind of message to use  for social media like facebook or instagram, so that it's convincing to the target audience.

WEEK 7

We refined the user journey map according to the feedback given by Mr. Mike during the class.

fig. 1.13 ; refined user journey map

After refining user journey map, we continue to discuss deeper on our ideas of the product. We planning to color the product but not sure is the material can work a not. And so, we asked April for her suggestion.

She thinks we will have to experiment since they are new materials. But normally by spray painting them will do with some coating. If we wanted more colour choices can actually look at recycle plastics.
So there's a community that help to collect used plastics and melt them to reproduce plastics pieces into any shape we need. So we will have to design the product form and create a mold for injection molding.

fig. 1.14 ; ideas

And also we updated the timeline that we planned to do this semester. Hope that everything goes well as we planned.

WEEK 8

We have no class for this week due to the independent learning week as usual. I started to find some references of the background for the model presentation. I will start to model out the product after Naomi has done the sketches.

fig. 1.16 ; model's background references

Our partners from WBU has missing for a few weeks. We informed Mr. Mike about this situation then he said he will informed their lecturer for this issue. However, we continue with our product design and ideas.

fig. 1.17 ; product idea

Meanwhile, we decided our art direction for the whole project, including color scheme, typography and art style to put on the logo, website, app and packaging.

fig. 1.18 ; art direction

Mr. Mike mentioned that the app wasn't necessary. We can consider to forget about doing an app, just a website is enough.

WEEK 9

We have a new partner from WBU, Vit. He was very efficient because he showed us his design next three days after we brief him about urban farming and our research data. His design looks so cool, I really like it so much!

fig. 1.19 ; Vit's design

Lecturer's Feedback :
- Need to finalize the product sketch by this week.
- Need to explain the product design to the product designer, Ms. April this Friday.
- The product need to be placed indoor and outdoor
- The product size cannot be too big as we aiming at space saving
- The product needs to be family friendly as a family activity
- Customizable

Vit immediately improved his idea and send us his new sketches next day. It is totally different with the previous one. Although it still looks very cool but I not quite sure how it works.

fig. 1.20 ; Vit's new idea

WEEK 10

Finally our first partner, Bao showed up. He mentioned that he had some learning problems with researching the topic in these few weeks. He has a new idea for the product. The inspiration is the beer crate, that they stacked on top of each other like the module. The system of hydroponic gardening that he is using in the design is the Deep Water Culture system or the Wick system.

fig. 1.21 ; Bao's idea

As for now we are at this stage that we finalized our product, we decided to focusing on Vit’s idea and started the work. We mainly will focus on Vit’s product to complete our marketing plans, packaging design. Meanwhile, Jez and Rachel has started to design the logo.

fig. 1.22 ; logo first draft

Lecturer's Feedback :
Lines design cannot work. The lines in between need to be wider as it's too fine when scaled down.

Finally below is our final logo design:

fig. 1.23 ; logo

WEEK 11

Bao and Vit decided to combine their ideas. They did a lot of research and explanation in Miro. It's totally a different product again.

fig. 1.24 ; research

fig. 1.25 ; Bao's idea

fig. 1.26 ; Bao and Vit's idea

Lecturer's Feedback :
This idea was too complicated. All the lecturers prefer to continue with Bao's idea because it meets our How Might We and it's simple and well designed.

WEEK 12

It's week 12 already our partners still haven't finalized the product. We are quite helpless because we can't start to design packaging, website, user manual design, social media ads design, we all waiting for the final design and our deadline are in 3 weeks. We are nervous that we can't make the deadline.

However, they still decided to combine their ideas because Bao thinks it doesn't fair to Vit if only choose his idea.

fig. 1.27 ; new combined idea

Obviously, all the lecturers still suggest them to use Bao's idea is enough. Then Vit can do the modelling and rendering part.

WEEK 13

We have no progress to update Mr. Mike this few weeks. Mr. Mike mentioned that I can start the space design first and Jia Yang can start the website design. I started to sketch out the floor plan for the space.

fig. 1.30 ; floor plan

Lecturer's Feedback :
I can remove the unnecessary part. Choose the part that are suitable to show the product is enough. Like example : Living room, Balcony, Kitchen, Car Porch, Garden, In cafe/store.

I already have a clear idea in my mind. Therefore, I started to download each model from online and combine all together in Maya. It was quite challenging but I was very happy with first draft. I uploaded to Sketchfab to show Mr. Mike.

I feel like there are something missing in the space. Then I added a computer table in the space and uploaded to the Spatial.

Lecturer's Feedback :
Well done! The only thing need to improve is there need a bigger space to walk around. The size is perfect except the space, just scale bigger the space is enough.

WEEK 14

Finally, Vit and Bao had finalized the product.

fig. 1. 31 ; finalized product

Everyone started to rush for their part. Naomi had sketched out the storyboard for the tutorial video.

fig. 1.32 ; storyboard

Finally Vit send me the 3D file after asking for many times. I started to rendered each angle in Maya for the tutorial video. Moreover, I edited the video in After Effects. Below is the final outcome :

WEEK 15

We prepared our presentation slide in Google Slide for the final presentation. Below is our final presentation slide :

REFLECTION

This is the first time I collaborate with other schools from another country. I had learned a lot and gained a lot of experiences during this collaboration. Personally, I think communicating with our WBU groupmates is very hard. I can't understand their accent sometimes and also they replying to our message is relatively slow. We waited for them to finalized their product until week 13 then we only have one week to work on everything. It was quite challenging but fortunately we finished everything on time. Everything was so last minutes and we also need to rush for other modules' final submission. Glad that I do expected the situation will happen then I managed my time properly during the last few weeks. Although it was quite rush but I finished all the final project on time. However, It was a good experience to work with them.
